Cenfri Partners with Mojaloop to Support Payment Inclusion

Mojaloop Foundation announced today that Cenfri, the South Africa-based independent think tank dedicated to enabling inclusive financial and economic growth, has joined its growing Global Partner Program.

Cenfri’s expertise in market development, regulatory frameworks and policy design will further empower the Mojaloop Foundation’s mission to advance inclusive instant payment systems (IIPS) worldwide.

“We are excited to welcome Cenfri to our partner ecosystem,” said Paula Hunter, Executive Director of the Mojaloop Foundation.

The Mojaloop Foundation launched its Global Partner Program to accelerate the development, deployment and adoption of open, interoperable digital payment systems in emerging markets. This initiative brings together organizations across technology, policy, research and financial sectors—including AfricaNenda, FNA, Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) and Modular Open-Source Identity Platform (MOSIP), and now Cenfri—to collaboratively address barriers to financial inclusion.

“We are excited to welcome Cenfri to our partner ecosystem,” said Paula Hunter, Executive Director of the Mojaloop Foundation. “Cenfri’s thought leadership and policy expertise will be invaluable in helping governments and central banks craft regulatory and governance frameworks that enable inclusive, sustainable and trusted payment systems in emerging markets.”

Under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Mojaloop Foundation and Cenfri will work together to develop strategies, regulatory frameworks and policy guidelines to foster the successful adoption of inclusive instant payment systems. The goal of the collaboration is for Cenfri to work with adopters of the Mojaloop platform to help them design sound policy and regulatory frameworks that will accelerate the adoption of instant payments.

“Cenfri’s participation reflects our shared commitment to closing the financial inclusion gap, particularly across Africa,” said Barry Cooper, Technical Director at Cenfri. “Together with the Mojaloop Foundation, we aim to help countries unlock the full potential of inclusive payment systems by shaping policies that promote innovation while safeguarding consumers and ensuring market sustainability.”

The Mojaloop Partner Program drives collaboration across key focus areas:

  • Collaborative Development: Co-creation of tools and technologies to enhance payment system interoperability and affordability.
  • Engagement Initiatives: Joint efforts to raise awareness and demand for open-source IIPS and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) solutions.
  • Thought Leadership: Advancing policies, standards and innovations like ISO 20022 evolution, AI applications in payments, stablecoins and cross-border transactions.

The addition of Cenfri to this program strengthens its global reach, helping more countries deploy effective, inclusive payment solutions that meet local needs while aligning with international best practices.
