Smile ID and Mastercard to Scale Digital Identity Across Africa

Smile ID, Africa’s leading identity verification provider, has strengthened its partnership with Mastercard to accelerate the rollout of secure and scalable digital identity solutions across the continent.

The extended collaboration is designed to support banks, fintechs, mobile money operators, and other enterprises in quickly and securely onboarding new customers, reducing fraud, and expanding financial access for millions.

This agreement combines Mastercard’s global expertise in identity technology with Smile ID’s advanced data verification and fraud detection capabilities. By integrating these strengths, the partnership aims to transform how identity is verified in Africa’s rapidly growing digital economy.

Addressing Africa’s Identity, Fraud, and Inclusion Gap

Africa’s digital economy is projected to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030, making trusted identity solutions essential for unlocking opportunity. Yet, fragmented identity systems, rising cases of fraud, and millions of citizens lacking formal identification remain significant barriers to inclusive growth.

Smartphone penetration is climbing steadily, and digital channels are increasingly becoming the backbone of commerce, payments, and financial services. However, without secure identity verification, the risks of fraud and exclusion multiply. Smile ID and Mastercard are tackling this gap directly, ensuring individuals and businesses can participate in the digital economy with confidence.

For more than fifty years, Mastercard has worked with African governments, financial institutions, and communities to advance financial inclusion and economic development. This partnership builds on that legacy by enabling compliant and accessible identity verification solutions that meet Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) requirements across diverse markets.

As part of the agreement, Mastercard has also made a minority investment in Smile ID, demonstrating its long-term commitment to fostering innovation and inclusion in Africa’s financial landscape.

Unlocking Trust Through Technology

“This partnership with Smile ID is a pivotal step in advancing digital trust and inclusion across Africa. As fragmented identity systems slow down businesses and lock millions out of the digital economy, Smile ID’s innovative identity platform complements Mastercard’s commitment to fostering secure and inclusive digital ecosystems,” said Selin Bahadirli, Executive Vice President, Services, Mastercard EEMEA.

Through the collaboration, Mastercard customers—spanning banks, telecom providers, mobile money operators, and fintechs—will gain access to Smile ID’s market-leading identity verification tools. These will be integrated into Mastercard’s existing digital platforms, enabling:

  • Instant, secure onboarding of users across multiple African markets.
  • Enhanced fraud detection and prevention, including combating synthetic identity fraud.
  • Compliance with local and international KYC/AML standards eases regulatory challenges.
  • Scalable solutions for cross-border commerce, supporting Africa’s global digital trade ambitions.

Smile ID’s extensive integrations with local governments and trusted data sources give this partnership a unique regional reach and reliability. Near real-time onboarding and pan-African connectivity make it possible to build trust at scale, while Mastercard’s insights provide global best practices and advanced security layers.

Combating Synthetic Identity Fraud

Fraud remains one of the most pressing challenges in Africa’s financial services sector. The rise of synthetic identity fraud, in which criminals piece together real and fabricated identity details, has cost banks and lenders hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

“The surge in synthetic identity fraud in Africa is costing banks and lenders hundreds of millions of dollars a year,” said Mark Straub, CEO of Smile ID. “By joining forces with Mastercard, we can help turn the tide. As we combine insights and technologies, we can expand opportunities for consumers by giving banks and mobile wallets the confidence to onboard the next 300 million African users securely, in seconds.”

Building the Future of Inclusion

The Mastercard–Smile ID partnership is more than a commercial agreement; it is a commitment to building the infrastructure of trust required for Africa’s digital future. Together, the two organisations are addressing one of the continent’s most urgent needs—secure, universal identity verification—while opening doors for financial inclusion, innovation, and economic participation.

By reducing fraud, streamlining onboarding, and empowering businesses to comply with complex regulations, this collaboration has the potential to transform how Africans access and engage with the digital economy. It signals a new chapter in digital inclusion, where millions more can join the financial system safely and confidently.
