SnapScan Wins Top prize at MTN Business App of the Year Awards 2013

Mobile payments app SnapScan was voted ‘App of the Year’ at the annual MTN Business App of the Year Awards in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg. The 8-month old start-up from Stellenbosch managed to beat 253 other entrants, including apps from FNB, DStv, and Discovery, to take the top prize.

In addition to being named app of the year, SnapScan also walked away with the ‘Best HTML5 App’ prize, and was among the final three apps shortlisted for the ‘Best iOS App’ and ‘Most Innovative App’ awards.

Judging the 2013 MTN Business App of the Year Awards were Toby Shapshak, editor of Stuff Magazine, Melissa Attree, a social media expert, and Kojo Baffoe, editor of Destiny Man Magazine. Also on the judges panel were Max Stone, a divisional director at Pinnacle Africa, and Jonathan Hoehler, mobile technologies manager at Deloitte Digital.

Kobus Ehlers, co-founder of SnapScan, said “SnapScan does something we really need technology to do more of – make our lives easier. Using SnapScan is as fast as paying with cash, especially if you don’t need change, and much faster than a card payment. It also simplifies the payment process for businesses. Vendors of any size can use it to accept payments securely – all they need is a barcode to scan, and a mobile phone. They don’t even need a bank account – money paid via SnapScan can be withdrawn from any Standard Bank ATM. With so many people operating in the informal sector here in South Africa, it’s ideal for the local market.”

SnapScan is a smartphone app that allows users to make payments simply by scanning a code in-store. The app is available for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry devices. SnapScan is currently being rolled out to various merchants in and around Stellenbosch. A national implementation is due to follow shortly thereafter.

SnapScan is developed by FireID Payments, in partnership with Standard Bank’s Beyond Payments.
