The REWE Group, a diversified trading, travel and tourism group with turnover of 50 billion euros, is always testing new ways to make its IT systems more energy-efficient. The most recent example is the deployment of extremely low-power POS terminals. Over the next three to four years, the group will collaborate with its IT solutions partner, Wincor Nixdorf, to replace 10,000 older terminals with the new REWE Box V.
On average, the REWE Box V consumes nearly 100-kilowatt hours of electricity per year. That consumption, applied across the fleet of terminals to be replaced, represents a savings of about 2.83 million kilowatt hours, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 800 four-person households.
The REWE Box V is based on Wincor Nixdorf’s BEETLE /X plus POS terminal. It is especially designed for a long lifespan and low operating costs. The enclosed dustproof and fanless system is extremely energy-efficient, operating without moving parts to minimize maintenance and downtime.
“We don’t need to weigh between sustainability on the one side and performance on the other but receive for a small additional cost a sustainable technology that also delivers higher performance,” said Jens Siebenhaar, Managing Director of REWE Informations-Systeme GmbH. Initial performance figures show the low-power POS terminals cutting energy usage nearly in half, representing a significant savings for REWE.
REWE has a holistic view of sustainability with its IT systems. “It extends from energy consumption and the service concept to the durability of the mechanical components,” said Jens Siebenhaar. Less maintenance and downtime mean higher system availability and fewer technician deployments – every deployment kilometer saved helps reduce CO2 emissions.
