ATMIA Releases Risk Assessment Report for Migration from Windows XP

The ATM Industry Association has announced the release of its report analysing the risks of not properly preparing for the migration from Windows XP to a Windows 7 OS following Microsoft’s end-of-support for XP in April this year.

Entitled “Risks of Maintaining Windows XP Platform for ATMs”, the report recommends steps for mitigating or eliminating these risks of the end-of-support and is aimed at helping members understand the full impact of this important OS change.

“This is the most important change to the global ATM industry in this year and all our members need to read this report to be fully prepared,” Mike Lee, CEO, commented. “After April 8th, Microsoft will discontinue Windows XP support services, including security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, and online technical content updates. No company can afford to ignore such an important change.”

The report outlines the risks of continuing to operate on the Windows XP platform after the end of the support lifecycle. It also explains the steps which can be taken to address these risks. The report was considered necessary after ATMIA ran an international industry readiness survey last year which showed good awareness of the migration but insufficient real readiness for the change at the time.

“I would like to thank Heiko Zißner, ITecon Financial IT-Service, for researching and authoring the report,” Lee said, “ along with his two main reviewers, Stephan Hölger, also of ITecon, and ATMIA and Atima consultant, Véronique Delsalle, for their work in making our industry more vigilant and attentive about the importance of the coming Windows OS migration.”
